BTW, the Monarchs stay in the Pismo Beach grove through February, at least most years. Usually they are in the center of the grove, more or less protected from the weather. When I was there, there had just been a heavy rainstorm that came from the "wrong" direction. The Monarchs had apparently flown to the opposite side of the grove for protection. It is believed that they lost some in the storm, but there were 2 or 3 clusters of them when I was there. Hopefully they can regroup and survive this very rainy winter.
